Hither Green Cinema Presents: ‘Cars’ & ‘American Graffiti’ in a “Unique” location

For Hither Green Festival we are showing 2 favourite films in a unique location. At the corner of Ennersdale Road and Nightingale Grove is a treasure trove of ‘Wacky’ cars and memorabilia, the pride and joy of Gary ‘Peel Cars’ Hillman. Gary is letting us use his basement garage (where he keeps his astonishing collection) to show these films in this unique event and the only way you will be able to see his wonderful toys this year.

First we are showing the animated Pixar film ‘Cars’. Before the film starts marvel at the wonderful display of cars and memorabilia and let your kids make their own car to watch the film in and possibly win original Disney art work for prizes. Doors open at 1pm and the film starts at 2pm. £3 per child, adults free but must be accompanied by a child

Then for the nostalgia buffs we are showing the George Lucas classic ‘American Graffiti’. Before the film starts marvel at the wonderful display of cars and then a lucky few will be able to watch this cruising movie from inside a car! Just like an indoor drive-in!! Doors open at 5pm, film starts at 6pm. £3 each (If seats are sold out in advance there will be a very limited amount of standing tickets available on the door).

Freshly made popcorn, hot dogs, cakes, nibbles as well as juices, tea, coffee, beer and wine will be available all day.

Japanese Spring – The Cat Returns (U) & Zatoichi (18)

Bring your little Ninjas to an afternoon of Japanese themed activities. We kick off at 2pm with Japanese inspired games including origami and Samurai hat making, Japanese calligraphy for your little Emperors and Empresses and Fukuwarai (a Japanese version of pin the tale on the donkey) followed by a Kendo demonstration and free Karate lesson* by the Lewisham Shotokan Karate Centre, followed by the animated fantasy film The Cat Returns.

When a young girl rescues a cat from traffic she finds herself receiving gifts from the King of the Cats, who also wants her to marry his son, Prince Lune. With the assistance of a fat, grouchy real cat and an elegant cat statuette come to life, the girl has to find a way out of marrying the Prince of cats but gets whisked off to the Cat Kingdom before she has time to escape…

Shotokan Karate has long had many benefits, which include developing confidence, fitness and stamina as well as self-defence. But most importantly, we promise to wear the little ones out!

Recommended age: 6-12

Delicious cakes, treats and refreshments will be available.

Critically acclaimed, Zatoichi is colourful, rich with action and beautifully composed. The film follows the journey of a blind masseur and master swordsman, with powerful sequences and stunning choreography. Writer-director-actor Takeshi Kitano takes on this classic samurai character with his own brand of cinematic flair. Effortless and uncontrived, Zatoichi is pure cinematic magic.

Multiple award winner, My Neighbour Totoro helped launch Japanese animation into the global spotlight. The film follows the two young daughters of a professor and their interactions with friendly wood spirits in postwar rural Japan. We promise it won’t disappoint.

Shotokan Karate has long had many benefits, which include developing confidence, fitness and stamina as well as self-defence. But most importantly, we promise to wear the little ones out!

Hither Green Cinema celebrates LGBT History Month 2013

From comic sissies to lesbian vampires, from pathetic queens to sadistic predators, Hollywood has both reflected and defined how we think about sexuality. This 1995 film shows clips from over 100 films as well as interviews with many of the filmmakers and actors including Tom Hanks, Susan Sarandon and Tony Curtis. Lily Tomlin narrates this surprising, hilarious and disturbing documentary about gay and lesbian movie characters since the very beginning of cinema. The Celluloid Closet explodes sexual myths and explores how our attitudes about homosexuality and sex roles have evolved through the century.
Critically acclaimed (“That’s Entertainment with a difference… snappy, glamorous… a testimonial to the magic of the movies.” - J. Hoberman, Premiere) watch this now before the inevitable follow up comes to the big screen.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans History Month takes place every year in February and celebrates the lives and achievements of the LGBT community.

From 5pm there will be an opportunity to talk with local LGBT social and campaigning groups in a free ‘Pride Village Market’ inside the hall. There may even be freebies! Come and join this social with a difference with stalls from The Albert Kennedy Trust, Planet London, University of East London, Lewisham LGBT police liaison and more to be announced.

We urge everyone to regularly check their website for information concerning what more can be done to stop the closure of out perfectly good, well run Hospital.

Chills In The Chapel: Scared Shrekless – SOLD OUT!!

Hither Green Hall presents Chills in the Chapel: Scared Shrekless (Cert U)!! A fang-packed afternoon of games and story telling for your monsters and ghouls followed by a matinee showing of Shreks Halloween special to kick off half term with some hair-raising delights!

Ahead of the screening, we’ll have some ghoulish games of pin the bone to the skeleton, spooky disco and wrap up (my) mummy! We also have a pinata or two full of special treats and spooktacular story-telling with our resident witch. Not to mention a banquet of cakes and goodies washed down with some frogspawn punch! With phantom prizes for the best dressed, what better start to the horror holidays.

Bring your boys and ghouls to the Crypt at St Swithun’s Hall from 2.30pm on Sunday 28th October.

And once the little ones are tucked up in bed, join us for a candlelit screening of the 1922 vampire classic Nosferatu with the mad man of the Russian Steppe Igor Outkine and his possessed accordian having stolen the souls of a full orchestra he controls them in his squeezy box from hell!!!

Hither Green Hall presents: Chills in the Chapel – Nosferatu

Hither Green Cinema presents Chills in the Chapel: Nosferatu (1922) with live musical accompaniment by Igor Outkine and his electronic accordion possessed by the devil himself!!!

Dare you enter the Chapel of terror where surprises lie around each and every corner. Is that really a coffin in the corner, is it really opening!?!? Where did this mist roll in from? What could it be hiding around that corner or underneath that table?? Are they really serving frog spawn punch and severed fingers with a bleeding heart cake!?!?

We have gone all out this Halloween season to bring you a classic film, the original vampire movie all other vampire films try to emulate, with the amazing live accompaniment of Igor Outkine and his demon accordion who’s playing has been described as “Brilliant, enchanting. Igor Outkine’s playing had such presence that it could almost have been mistaken for a whole orchestra.”

St Swithun’s Hall will be fully decorated for the day for total immersion. Fancy dress is encouraged and winners will be chosen and prizes will be awarded (we are not saying you will want the yaks brain soup but it is yours if you want it!)

Hither Green Week Films: Lunatic (18) & Animalympics (U)

For Hither Green Week we are showing 2 films. One at the Station Pub, Staplehurst Road for the adults and one at St Swithun’s Hall off Hither Green Lane for children of all ages!!

Pie and Mash Films are a local film company known for their collection of gritty thought provoking British independent films and cutting edge documentaries.
We will be showing the award winning “Lunatic – Gangster Without a Gun” (awarded ‘Best International Feature’ at the New York International Film & Video Festival awards 25 June 2008.)
“Bill and Perry are a pair of entrepreneur chancers. The duo make a living out of a scam that allows them to collect rent from ex-council properties. But things aren’t as rosy as they seem and with an impending full moon, Bill and Perry are about to find out that anything can happen.”
Director (and Hither Green resident) Bill Maloney will be on hand to talk about Pie and Mash Films, his latest documentary investigations and what it takes to run for mayor of London.

Olympic fever starts early in Hither Green with the showing of the 1980s animated film Animalympics.
If you haven’t seen this one yet, you’ve got to. If you love movies about animation, animals and/or sports, “Animalympics” is the perfect movie for you!
Featuring the voice talents of Billy Crystal and Gilda Radner, the writing and directorial talents of Steven Lisberger (of “TRON” fame), plus an awesome soundtrack by 10CC’s Graham Gouldman, “Animalympics” is a wonderful film that can be enjoyed by anyone, no matter how young or old.

Hither Green Cinema at the FUSS AGM

Hither Green Cinema Presents ‘South of the River’ & ‘Sleep Well’

FUSS AGM & Short Film Screening

In May we are joining forces with FUSS (Friends and Users of Staplehurst Road Shops) as part of their AGM. FUSS will be voting for officers (Chair, Vice Chair, Treasurer, Minutes Secretary, Communications Officer with Shops, Communications Officer using Media) for their group and their AGM, like all their meetings, is open to all to attend. If you are interest in joining the FUSS group in one of the above roles contact them at fusscommittee@hotmail.co.uk before the 25th April when nominations will be closed.

Once all the official business has finished we will be showing 2 short films made by local film makers and shot in and around the Hither Green area.

First we will be showing ‘South of The River’ by Ben Honeybone maker of ‘The Story of Hither Green and The Corbett Estate’ Documentary. A thriller shot in SE13 and one of the BBC Short Film Units favourites.

Secondly we will be showing ‘Sleep Well’ the latest film from Mark Bowsher (maker of the triple award winning Brenda) shot and filmed in the Hither Green/Lee area.

Both these films will keep your attention, make you think and go ‘Oh I know where that is!’

Entry is free and the film makers may be around to talk to afterwards at the bar.

Film Night – 28th May 2011

From film makers making films in Hither Green to National and International films we end the Hither Green Community Association’s Hither Green Week in a blaze of film this Sunday 29th May.

Teatro Vivo will be visiting us from the 1950s, the BBC will be visiting us from Wood Lane, Constance Cakes will be coming from just around the corner and the beer will be coming from Greenwich with film makers from all over descending on Hither Green for this one night only event.

If you want to meet the people behind the camera, or would just like to see the cream of tomorrow’s crop of films, pop along on Sunday. We have something for everyone.
